What is Wild OS?
Wild OS is a free, open source operating system for people who want the privacy and security of Linux without giving up the programs and habits they already have. You don’t need to know anything about Linux to use it.
It’s built in three layers, and each one has a single job.
| Layer | What it does |
|---|---|
| Hardened foundation | Debian 13 with an established security hardening layer: tightened kernel settings, AppArmor, USB device control and memory wiped on shutdown. The disk is encrypted from install, and every update is signed. |
| The Wild desktop | KDE’s proven engine underneath, with every screen you touch redesigned: Start, the taskbar, Settings, Files, the Store, the installer, first start and the system dialogs. |
| Windows mode | A genuine copy of Windows 11 Pro running out of sight. Each Windows program opens as its own normal window on your desktop. |
What it costs
Section titled “What it costs”Nothing. There’s no licence fee, subscription or premium tier, and Wild OS will stay free. The only thing you might pay for is Windows itself, and only if you want Windows mode and your PC didn’t come with a Windows 11 Pro licence. See Windows licences.
What it doesn’t do
Section titled “What it doesn’t do”- No account. Your account lives on your computer. Wild OS never asks you to sign in online.
- No telemetry. Nothing about how you use your computer is sent anywhere. See what Wild OS sends online.
- No adverts. Not in Start, not in Settings, not anywhere.
Where it’s at
Section titled “Where it’s at”Wild OS is in early alpha. The desktop, installer, Store, Settings and update channel work in test builds, and Windows mode is being finished now. Leave your email at wildos.io to hear the day it’s ready, or follow the build on GitHub.
