Playing games

Most Windows games run on Wild OS through Steam, without Windows mode.

  1. Install Steam from the Store. If you download Steam’s Windows installer instead, Wild OS offers the Linux version.
  2. Sign in and install your games as usual.

Steam’s built-in Proton runs Windows games on Linux, and it covers most of the Steam library. Games built for Linux run directly. ProtonDB lists how well each game runs, as reported by players.

Games with kernel-level anti-cheat refuse to run on Linux and in virtual machines, so they won’t run on Wild OS, in Windows mode or anywhere else. They include Fortnite, and Valorant and other Riot Games titles. Wild OS tells you so when you try to install one, rather than letting it fail.

Windows mode is built for everyday programs like Office, Adobe apps and accounts software. Games run faster through Proton, with your graphics card used directly.
