Start your PC from the stick
Open the boot menu
Section titled “Open the boot menu”Plug the stick in, then switch the computer on while pressing its boot menu key. Keep tapping it until a menu appears.
| Make | Key |
|---|---|
| Dell, Lenovo | F12 |
| HP | F9, or Esc then F9 |
| ASUS | F8 |
| Acer | F12 or Esc |
| Intel Mac | Hold Option |
Pick the entry for your USB stick that mentions UEFI. An older PC without UEFI shows just the stick, so pick that.
From Windows you can also hold Shift while you click Restart, then choose Use a device and pick the stick.
The Wild OS start menu
Section titled “The Wild OS start menu”The Wild OS menu appears and, after 8 seconds, starts the first entry on its own.
| Entry | What it does |
|---|---|
| Install Wild OS | Opens the installer straight away, with no desktop first. |
| Try Wild OS | Opens a full Wild OS desktop running from the stick. Nothing on your disk changes, and you can install from there too. |
| Check this USB stick | Checks every file on the stick against its checksum, then carries on into the trial desktop. Use it if anything seems odd. |
| Advanced | Safe graphics versions of Install and Try, start-up messages for diagnosing problems, and on UEFI PCs a shortcut to the firmware settings. |
If the screen goes black or garbled after you pick an entry, restart and use Install with safe graphics or Try with safe graphics from Advanced.
Secure Boot
Section titled “Secure Boot”You can leave Secure Boot on. On UEFI PCs Wild OS starts with Secure Boot on, both from the stick and once installed.
If the stick doesn’t appear at all, see the USB stick won’t start.
